analog tech test
To further simplify the technical aspect of the analog, I decided to use a few fluorescent tubes rather than a superabundance of single light bulbs. This also reduces the axes of motion and light response to just the XY.
I purchased a passive infrared motion sensor that is meant to replace a light switch indoors. It reads motion that is within a 180 degree sensing angle by detecting a change in infrared levels in the room. It is intended to work within a 20 foot range, but I found during my test that the response time is much faster and more reliable if the range of motion is very close -- I also think that I can manipulate the sensing area of coverage by wrapping or covering the motion detector in a translucent plastic or vellum so that it won't pick up the occupancy of the entire room.
I still need to refine the design of the analog, but I wanted to get a jump start on the technical side to assure myself that it was all feasible given our time constraint!
