These radial diagrams are a more accurate spatial representation of the system as a whole -- rather than depicting the Master Server as an object at the top of a strict hierarchy, it is conceived as more of a network or coordinator of the other servers. If Craigslist is like a city in microcosm, it also makes sense for the global diagram to read almost like a Haussmann plan.
